Welcome to The P.L.A.Y.S.- Promoting Literacy Among Youth Sports, a nonprofit online digital youth sports magazine literacy resource, founded in 2016 with the goal of addressing the literacy crisis in our youth sports community. We are thrilled to announce the evolution of The P.L.A.Y.S., into a groundbreaking initiative aimed at not only advancing literacy among young student athletes but their peers in the classrooms as well. As a testament to our commitment to literacy enhancement, we proudly introduce R.I.S.E. – Reading Initiative Strategizing to Excellence, a peer tutoring program that brings together two youth educational communities to promote reading excellence.
Thanks,
Sonia D. Hernandez Frierson, M.Ed.
DIGITAL YOUTH SPORTS MAGAZINE
The online digital youth sports magazine will continue as a literacy resource with the purpose of aiding and improving literacy among young student athletes and their peers. Our main goals are to stimulate a desire to read, awaken inquisitiveness, enhance vocabulary, and celebrate their athletic and academic triumphs.
We depict these youngsters as superstars and they highlight elite college and professional athletes and people who inspire them. The P.L.A.Y.S. is committed to helping these students and athletes become proficient in learning and achieving academic success.
We feel children will be more interested in reading since they are reading about youths like themselves; they can see themselves as that kid who is being featured and that in turn makes reading more interesting for them. The P.L.A.Y.S. extends an invitation for parents, principals, teachers, coaches, and athletes to completed submission form for publication. We offer this opportunity to players and students from age 5 through high-school years.
A The P.L.A.Y.S. representative may attend sports events or other activities in certain situations. The magazines can be accessed any time on any internet/wifi device in an effort to continuously support youth literacy.

PEER TUTORING PROGRAM
R.I.S.E. - Reading Initiative Strategizing to Excellence is not just a peer tutoring program; it's a beacon of shared knowledge and mentorship. In this unique initiative, our high school students, who have undergone specialized training and are proficient in reading, willingly devote their time to work with our young learners in grades 1 through 3 while simultaneously earning documented community service credit hours.
This program is as a strategic initiative that operates as an extension of young students regular classroom activities. We focus on the individual reading deficiencies identified through the iReady test results, utilizing the same metrics that guide their classroom's small group reading sessions that are limited on time. R.I.S.E. is tailored to address specific needs, offering individualized attention to complement and reinforce the efforts of our dedicated classroom teachers. The program operates seamlessly alongside the small group activities conducted by the classroom teachers, extending, complementing, and enhancing the learning experience.
The truly exceptional aspect is the commitment of our high school tutors, who generously contribute their time and expertise in person during the week after school or on Saturdays via Zoom. These 45-minute sessions at 4:00 pm in person or 10 am or 2 pm on Saturdays via Zoom are not just about reading; they are about fostering a love for learning, instilling confidence, and creating bonds that transcend age and grade levels, building a community of learners where the strengths of our high school mentors uplift the aspirations of our young readers.
